Thought for the day

On the way to the wales-wide web to read Graham Attwell's blog from May this year e-portfolios - the DNA of the Personal Learning Environment? (thanks Martin Owen) I stopped off at other blogs on on my list and followed conversations. I came across a couple of videos that held me there to the end... Eight year old Cracks the Code to Happy Thought and much much longer from Professor Randy Pausch, of Carnegie Mellon. The first 8 minutes are introductions....... Really Achieving your Childhood Dreams.. He uses the term "head fakes " as a definition of the real learning that happens when we are doing something else.... like heading for one thing on the Internet and stopping off at others along the way:-)

Internet privacy

Earlier this year Oxford students had images on their facebook pages used as evidence to discipline them. Now we see the consequences of not guarding your privacy on the sports pages where rising tennis stars are suspended for unprofessional behaviour and lack of discipline as a result of the photographic evidence on their Beebo sites. It could be said that this was the lesser of many evils that could have befallen them because of their lack of understanding or carelessness. We need to prepare children for what it means to use the internet so that they can take part with responsibility and care for themselves. Every one in society needs to take their part, not just schools and parents. Locking down internet access in schools to protect children is short sighted.
